Karen Rubins at CECAF

CECAF welcomes Karen Rubins to Earl Haig.

I will have the world’s silliest gangster comic “The Tale of Tony Cinderello” for sale, including gratuitous swearing and hand applied glittery bits.
I will also be selling copies of “Alidade”, a unique collaboration comic made with Richy K Chandler, Francesca Dare, Tim Hassan and Mike Medaglia.
And I will be doing sketch commissions at the table on the day from £10.
You can also come and say hello to my little friend; baseball bat-wielding gangster fairy Big Vinny.

Darell Thorpe – Rum Run Awry

Darrell Thorpe will be launching his book Rum Run Awry at CECAF.

Head over to his site for ordering details

About the book.

Death_By_Heroism_rum_run_awry_grande

Mythical adventurer, Alexander McCuba, is a burly, bearded, simple-minded man of the Guild of Adventurers. Whilst on a prestigious quest to harvest the rum of the Great Extravaganza, he attempts to fight the sea – and ends up marooned on a mysterious island.

A Rum Run Awry is McCuba’s personal diary from the island. Entry by hilarious entry, it documents his baffling experiences with the curious inhabitants of the land, their bizarre customs and his own struggles with homesickness, madness and lack-of-rum…ness.

The log book has been printed exactly as it was found, complete with all McCuba’s scribbles, sketches and stains, plus a hundred pages of glorious vibrant illustrations that immerse us in his technicolour adventure. Some pages are detailed descriptions of the new world around him; others are manic scrawls across the pages – the rantings of a man losing his mind.

This is the first time such a diary has been made publicly available, and it is easy to see why. It takes a brave person to strike out into a new land; it takes an even braver person to try and understand the workings of a mind like Alexander McCuba. This isn’t a book, it’s a quest.

Exhibitor – Matt Boyce

Matt Boyce’s Everything is one of those anthologies that may appear a little disjointed at a first glance given that it collects strips that are often quite disparate in terms of style and presentation. I place myself on the other side of that argument however. Because, as an artistic statement on an individual creator’s grasp of the diverse possibilities of the form, compilations like Everything provide a fascinating showcase of the breadth of their approach to the page. From a critic’s perspective they’re a dream offering, though I will freely admit that to a casual punter there may be an element of the fragmented to the reading experience.

Between this minicomic’s covers there are 13 pages of strips ranging between a page to 4 pages in length. Boyce brings together themes of the autobiographical, the humorous and the broodingly contemplative and adopts a number of differing visual styles along the way. Most of the work is in black and white with the exception of the colour centre section which is also the highlight of the work on offer here.
